Hong Kong opens new pathway for medical practice

May 6, 2022

SYDNEY - Hong Kong's Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, is promoting a new pathway to medical students and practitioners in Australia for admission as qualified non-locally trained doctors able to practise in Hong Kong.

Addressing a webinar jointly organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney, and the Australasian Medical Services Coalition, she presented details of the new pathway available under Hong Kong's Medical Registration Ordinance, promulgation of the first batch of recognised medical qualifications in late April, and other initiatives taken by the Government to facilitate admission of non-locally trained doctors to practise in Hong Kong.

Prof. Chan said non-locally trained doctors who possessed recognised medical qualifications, subject to fulfillment of certain criteria, could apply for special registration to practise in Hong Kong's public healthcare institutions.

"After serving for a certain period, obtaining recognised specialist qualifications and passing the assessment, they will be granted full registration to practise in Hong Kong," she said.

Non-locally trained medical graduates who possessed the recognised medical qualifications but had yet to undergo internship outside Hong Kong could, subject to fulfillment of relevant criteria, take the Licensing Examination of the Medical Council of Hong Kong to apply for special registration to practise in public healthcare institutions.

"They may also obtain full registration after meeting the requirements applicable to all special registration doctors," she said.
