Huawei mulls UK court patent decision

SHANGHAI - Smartphone and telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co Ltd said it is evaluating the decision of a leading court in the United Kingdom over patent infringement that could mean its phones will not be allowed to be sold in the UK, It is also assessing possible steps it may take, China Daily reports.

The High Court of England and Wales recently ruled that Huawei must pay licensing fees to Unwired Planet International (UPI), a U.S. software company that owns thousands of Ericsson patents. The fees relate to the patents for 4G technologies adopted by Huawei devices.

The Shenzhen-based company said in a statement that it has received the decision of the court, but it does not believe the decision will adversely affect its business operations, either in the UK or in other countries.

"Huawei remains committed to providing its cutting-edge products and services to our customers without interruption," the statement said.

The ruling brings an end to the last of unresolved lawsuits that UPI filed in 2014, when it sued Google, Samsung, and Huawei. The Google lawsuit was reconciled in 2015, and Samsung reached a settlement with UPI in 2016. www.webershandwick.cn (ATI).
